I ❤️ Mark Warner

It was time once again for the (not quite all the ) family skiing holiday, and therefore time for the ridiculously early alarm to wake us at 3.30am. We quietly snuck out, waving to Misty as we went, and left for Birmingham airport and Val D'Isere, France.
For the last couple of years we have been very disappointed with the way Thompson arrange the check in, and decided to try a different company, Mark Warner, instead. We arrived at the airport two and a half hours before the 8am flight, just in case, and left our car with the friendly drop and go guy. Last time this took a while as well, but this time it was really quick.  A good omen? Into the check in hall and Mark and Monarch had provided us with no queue. At All. He even gave us a pleasant check in clerk. No queue at the ski check in either. There was a small hold up at security when the lady in front produced around ten different bottles of liquid, one at a time, saying 'does this need to go in the clear bag?'. Fascinating. And when Ian had to remove his boots. Then we were through to departures, and before we knew it were tucking in to sausage sarnies. Once in the plane Mark told the two fatties sitting next to me to move to the front to balance the weight, leaving us Walters with a full row to ourselves. Chris drew the short straw and sat next to Kathy for the hairy take off ( due to a crosswind) and ritual knee grab. No sooner were we up than we were landing at Grenoble airport and collecting our luggage.
The very friendly rep directed us to the bus, and after a short wait we were off on the three and a half hour transfer.
On arrival all the staff were waiting, waving,  at the roadside to greet us. One kind girl even dragged my case up to the room! That's service.

the Hotel Val D'Isere. Our rooms are just above the car

It turns out that the hotel is in the very centre of town, and our balconies look out over the thriving hub. As dusk fell lots of pretty lights came on, a bit Christmassy for Kathys liking.

View from the balcony during the day.

And at night

The ski hire shop was right next door, just how I like it, and all the staff in there pleasant too.
We had been told that afternoon tea would be served at 4.30, so naturally we availed ourselves. Not only was there hot drinks and home made cakes, but also soup, breads and cheeses. A meal before the main meal. We all over indulged then returned to the room to bath and shower.
The welcome meeting was at 7, fizzy wine and canapés, introducing all the staff. Then the three course evening meal, wine included. 'Three Merlots please' said Ian. ' glasses or bottles?' was the reply. We started with glasses. How we managed to fit it all in I don't know. Then it was time for a brandy and bed. Skiing tomorrow.
